Our Cross Infection Control Policy
All staff are immunised against Hepatitis B. Tetanus booster due dates monitored and received when required.
- The Practice Provides protective clothing, gloves, masks and visors. These must be worn during all clinical procedures.
- Patients are given the option of wearing protective eyewear during their treatment.
- No member of clinical staff is to wear gloves outside the surgery.
- It is preferred that no member of staff is to wear clinical uniforms outside the Practice premises.
- All staff will be trained in Cross Infection Control.
- Instruments are placed in an alkazyme (Or equivalent) bath for appropriate time. They are then be rinsed with cold water and scrubbed with a long handled brush to remove any further debris, followed by autoclaving on the appropriate program. (Ultrasonic baths are also used when available.)
- All burs are placed in Rusnon or similar for a minimum of 3 hours. They are then scrubbed with a bur brush to remove any further debris, followed by a cycle in the autoclave on the appropriate program. (Ultrasonic baths are also used when available.)
- All hand pieces are used on one patient only before being removed of debris, oiled and autoclaved for the next use.
- All impressions are disinfected with Perform ID or Dimenol for 10 minutes before they are packaged and sent to the laboratory.
- All working areas are disinfected after each patient. These areas include all work surfaces, operating light, hand piece attachments and tubing, bracket table, suction tubing, cuspidor bowl, computer mouse and keyboard.
- Suction equipment is disinfected at the end of each session by running through with recommended disinfectant. This is also carried out after all surgical procedures.
- Disinfectants are provided for all equipment and are used at the beginning and end of the day and in-between patients.
- All instruments are stored in sterile pouches or clean drawers ready for use.
- All sharps are exposed of in yellow sharps containers, which are filled two thirds full only before sealed. All clinical waste is disposed of separately and placed in yellow bags which are collected by a clinical waste company along with all sharps containers.
- At the beginning of each day hand pieces and scalers are run through for two minutes to ensure no blockages occur.
- Any member of staff or patient developing a reaction to any material used in the practice will inform the Supervisor who will take appropriate action.
- Injuries due to clean sharps are encouraged to bleed, washed and cleaned with a disinfectant such as alcohol or desderman and covered with appropriate dressing. The Senior Nurse is informed and an entry is made in a duplicated RIDDOR accident book.

- No food is consumed in the Practice other than in designated areas.
- Medical History is updated on every patient on every visit.
- All staff are aware of the confidentiality laws which govern us.
